Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye disease and a leading cause of vision loss among people age over 50. There are two types of AMD: dry (atrophic) and wet (neovascular or exudative). Most AMD starts as the dry type and in 10-20% of individuals, it progresses to the wet type.
The AMD models in KBI can be obtained by:
· Choroidal Neovascularization (CNV) induced by argon laser shots. The blood vessel leakage and retinal neovascularization are validated by fluorescein angiography
(FA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT)
· Screening from KBI aged monkeys at different stages, and following up by FA and OCT
